Diabetic Foot care

Long-term complications of diabetes develop gradually. The longer you have diabetes and the less controlled your blood sugar, higher the risk of complications. With the growing number of people living with diabetes, the number of complications is also increasing. With the correct treatment and recommended lifestyle changes, many people with diabetes are able to prevent or delay the onset of complications, avoiding serious consequences to their health and well-being. A neglected or inadequately managed diabetic foot is one of the most serious and costly complications of diabetes which unfold due to neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease, and/or infection. This often leads to ulceration, gangrene and possible subsequent limb loss (amputation) or even loss of life. These are grievous outcomes and can result in a significant economic, social, and public health burden which is not acceptable. At the time of diagnosis of diabetes, and at regular diabetes check-ups, warning bells need to go off for diabetic feet. Risk stratification of diabetic foot can help in early detection as well as prevention of diabetic ulcer hence its consequence can be avoided. All people with diabetes should be screened and placed in the appropriate risk stratification which includes the clinical pathway for prevention and treatment.
