Calcaneus Fracture
Calcaneus is the largest tarsal bone. Calcaneus articulate with talus on its top which is weight bearing joint. It forms the hindfoot and transfer body weight to ground. It is the most common tarsal bone to get fractured. Calcaneus fracture is very painful and cause significant swelling. High energy trauma like road traffic accident or fall from height when heel bone gets crashed against the body weight. After fracture heel bone gets swollen shortened and deformed. Calcaneus fracture can be quite severe. The severity of the fracture depends on number of fracture line, size of the fracture fragment, amount of fragment displacement and involvement of articular cartilage of subtalar joint. Most of the time this fracture requires surgical treatment to restore subtalar joint as well as length and height of the heel bone. Even after adequate restoration of anatomy sometimes one may suffer from residual pain and stiffness of hind foot. Usually surgery is not done urgently till swelling of the overlying skin reduces. But avulsion of tuberosity is an emergency condition where surgical reduction and fixation should be done on an emergency basis. Avulsion of tuberosity fracture is common among females in seventh decade.
